Tennessee has enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact

Tennessee is a member state of the Social Work Licensure Compact. Once multistate licenses begin issuing in 2026, eligible Tennessee-licensed social workers will be able to apply for a single license that authorizes practice across all compact member states — similar to the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Licensed Baccalaureate Social Worker

LBSW

Entry-level license for BSW graduates. Allows non-clinical social work services in agency/organization settings with comprehensive scope of practice.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work from CSWE-accredited program
  • Official transcripts sent to Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure
  • Submit completed LBSW application with $75 fee
  • Pass ASWB Bachelor's examination
  • Complete criminal background check
  • No post-graduation experience required

Practice Scope:

  • Non-clinical social work in agency/organization settings
  • Case management and service coordination
  • Client interviews, assessments, and advocacy
  • Cannot provide independent private practice
  • Cannot diagnose or treat mental health conditions

Licensed Master Social Worker

LMSW

Master's level entry license allowing advanced generalist practice. Can provide clinical services under LAPSW/LCSW supervision and independent non-clinical services.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Social Work from CSWE-accredited program
  • Official transcripts sent to Tennessee Board of Social Worker Licensure
  • Submit completed LMSW application with $160 fee
  • Pass ASWB Master's examination
  • Complete criminal background check
  • No post-graduation experience required initially

  • Independent non-clinical social work practice
  • Advanced case management and consultation

Licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker

LAPSW

Advanced generalist license allowing independent practice for direct payment and third-party reimbursement. Provides comprehensive non-clinical social work authority.

Prerequisites:

  • Current LMSW license in good standing
  • Master's degree from CSWE-accredited program
  • Complete supervised experience requirements
  • Board-approved supervisor verification

Experience Requirements:

  • 3,000 hours supervised non-clinical experience as LMSW
  • Complete over minimum 2 years
  • 100 hours direct supervision (60 hours individual minimum)
  • Maximum 40 hours group supervision allowed
  • Supervision under LAPSW or LCSW
  • Pass ASWB Advanced Generalist examination

  • Independent practice outside agencies/organizations

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

LCSW

Highest level clinical license allowing independent clinical practice including diagnosis, treatment, psychotherapy, and clinical supervision of other social workers.

Prerequisites:

  • Current LMSW license in good standing
  • Master's degree from CSWE-accredited program
  • Complete clinical supervised experience requirements
  • Board-approved clinical supervisor verification

Clinical Experience Requirements:

  • 3,000 hours supervised clinical experience as LMSW
  • Include client-therapist contact experience
  • Complete over minimum 2 years
  • 100 hours direct clinical supervision (60 hours individual minimum)
  • Maximum 40 hours group supervision allowed
  • Supervision must be under qualified LCSW

Independent Clinical Authority:

  • Independent clinical diagnosis and treatment
  • Psychotherapy for individuals, families, groups
  • Treatment of behavioral, emotional, mental disorders
