Washington is one of the seven states that triggered activation of the Social Work Licensure Compact in April 2024. Once multistate licenses begin issuing in 2026, eligible Washington-licensed social workers will be able to apply for a single license authorizing practice across all compact member states.

Washington's four-tier system provides clear pathways from associate to full independent practice with separate tracks for advanced generalist and clinical work.

Licensed Social Worker Associate - Advanced

LSWAA

Associate license for MSW graduates pursuing advanced generalist practice. Allows supervised practice while accruing experience toward LASW licensure.

Requirements:

  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Social Work from CSWE-accredited program
  • Official transcripts sent directly from school to DOH
  • Approved Supervisor Verification form
  • Submit application with $35 processing fee
  • No supervised experience required for initial licensure
  • No examination required for associate level

Supervised Experience Requirements:

  • 3,000 total supervised hours toward LASW
  • 800+ hours direct client contact

Licensed Advanced Social Worker

LASW

Full advanced generalist license allowing independent practice in organized settings. Provides advocacy, case management, consultation, and supervised clinical work.

  • Completed LSWAA supervised experience (3,000 hours)
  • Master's or Doctoral degree in Social Work from CSWE-accredited program
  • Submit application with supervision verification forms
  • Pay $216 application and licensing fee

Birthday Renewal System

Washington uses a unique birthday renewal system - all licenses expire annually on your birthday. This personal renewal date system helps distribute renewal processing throughout the year.

S Six Renewal Maximum for Associates

Associate licenses (LSWAA/LSWAIC) can only be renewed six times maximum. This encourages timely progression to full licensure and ensures associates complete their supervised experience within a reasonable timeframe.

Extensive Clinical Hour Requirements

LICSW requires 4,000 supervised clinical hours (highest in the nation), including 1,000+ hours direct client contact and 130 hours supervision. This ensures exceptional clinical competency.

Comprehensive CE Requirements

Full licenses require 36 CE hours every two years including 6 hours ethics, 6 hours suicide prevention (every 6 years), and 2 hours health equity (every 4 years). Associates need 18 hours annually.

Distance Supervision Allowed

Washington permits limited distance supervision: LSWAA can use up to 40 hours, LSWAIC up to 60 hours. This flexibility supports rural practice and geographic accessibility.

Reciprocity Based on Substantial Equivalency

Washington evaluates other states for "substantial equivalency" in scope of practice. If approved, practitioners can receive temporary probationary licenses if licensed for 12+ months without disciplinary history.
